The Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) has presented the first images of the future Juan Carlos I Spanish Antarctic Base , located on Livingston Island.
At first, the CSIC facility could accommodate 12 people, a figure that increased 25 years later with the installation of new modules.
The new headquarters, which will be available from the 2017/2018 campaign , will be able to accommodate 52 scientists and technicians in its 2,000 m2 of living space, its 600 m2 of laboratories and its 1,500 m2 of storage. The habitable module is divided into three: one of them contains the infirmary, the kitchen, the pantry, the cold rooms, the dining room, the gym and the offices, and the other two are occupied by the bedrooms and bathrooms.
The base managed by the CSIC hosts scientific projects of all kinds. Climate change, melting ice, penguins, pollution, seismicity and plankton are some of the topics that are investigated there.
