Walrus sighted on North Sea island: "I didn't believe it at first"

People on the North Sea island of Baltrum could hardly believe their eyes. A walrus weighing tons rested there on Tuesday.

Baltrum – That hasn't existed since 1998: a walrus in the southern North Sea! The sensational discovery was made by an angler on Tuesday morning, September 7th, 2021. He immediately called the authorities. It is the first sighting in almost 20 years. At that time a walrus was discovered on the island of Juist.

The walruses, which are up to 3.5 meters long and weigh up to 1,000 kilograms, actually live around the North Pole. They are considered endangered species. Therefore, they are rarely found in such areas. But the guest on Baltrum seemed to have come to the island by a different route.
