We all get injured from time to time. From a simple bite to a traffic accident, the health workers who work in hospitals and health centers have seen practically everything. However, some injuries are more common than others. Do you know what the most common injuries are and how we usually injure ourselves?
According to the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), falling down stairs is the most common injury. Stair-related injuries pose a significant risk to older people, as they tend to fall more frequently due to cognitive decline and loss of fitness.
Young children and infants are also prone to falling and injuring themselves on stairs while learning to walk, as reflected in a study published in the International Journal of Developmental Neuroscience . According to research, stairs are the main reason children fall, followed by the bed and the stroller.
Different injuries depending on age
Injuries can vary based on age groups. Children five years and older often injure themselves playing on playgrounds, swimming pools or trampolines, as the study concludes. In fact, in five-year-old children these injuries are more common even than those related to stairs, while minors between the ages of five and fourteen tend to have more accidents with the bicycle.
Similarly, according to a study published in BMC Public Health , every year a large number of adolescents and young people (between the ages of 15 and 24) are injured while playing sports. Basketball and soccer are the sports that cause the most injuries in this age group, while most adults tend to injure themselves while exercising.
However, the fact that more injuries occur in a certain age group does not mean that we should stop exercising or playing sports, since physical activity is very beneficial for health. In addition, we can injure ourselves while riding a bicycle or doing any daily activity. Therefore, we only have to take into account that there is a risk associated with doing sports.
