The Society for the German Language (GfdS) announces the word for the year 2021 today in Wiesbaden.
Wiesbaden – The Society for the German Language (GfdS) announces the “Word of the Year” 2021 today at 11.00 am in Wiesbaden. From thousands of suggestions, a jury selected ten terms that had a particular linguistic impact on the political, economic and social life of the year.
Word of the year 2021: Term could have something to do with Corona again
In 2020, “Corona Pandemic” was named “Word of the Year”. According to the jury’s statement, the word stands for the worst crisis since the Second World War and for a multitude of new word formations. “Lockdown” and “Conspiracy Tale” landed in second and third place last year. Eight of the ten words selected were related to the coronavirus *. This year, too, it is therefore very likely that the term has something to do with the corona pandemic.
In 2019 it was the term “respectful”. According to GfdS, it is not frequency that is decisive for a place on the list of “Words of the Year”, but significance and popularity. The linguists see their selection as a contribution to contemporary history. The selected words and phrases are not associated with any rating or recommendation.

Word of the year 2021 in Austria: “Shadow Chancellor”
In Austria, the word for the year 2021 has already been determined: Here the term “shadow chancellor” has established itself – an ironic expression that came up after Sebastian Kurz * resigned. The word should refer to the fact that Kurz and not his successor Alexander Schallenberg as Federal Chancellor will determine politics. (red / dfpa / afp) * fr.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
