She was on the road for three and a half months: A young swimmer set a record in Great Britain.
John O’Groats – A 23-year-old Brit swam the length of the west coast of Britain from Cornwall to the north-eastern tip of Scotland.
“From the moment I first went under the water until I got back on land it was a truly incredible experience,” said Jasmine Harrison after spending more than three and a half months with her on Tuesday in John O’Groats, Scotland long adventure ended. She is the first woman to swim from Land’s End in Cornwall to John O’Groats in Scotland. The North Yorkshire swimmer also holds the record for being the youngest woman to row solo across the Atlantic.
Harrison started in early July. In several hour-long stages – the longest of which was twelve hours – she swam the almost 1500-kilometer route and encountered whales, dolphins, seals and, to her chagrin, one or two jellyfish. In the meantime, she even unwittingly got involved in a major military exercise. In addition to many unique experiences, the project was also physically and mentally demanding at times, said the 23-year-old – but also “incredibly enriching”. In addition to her normal diet, “a lot of candy bars” would have helped keep her swimming. dpa
