This Friday, October 22, the XLI Princess of Asturias Awards are held. The first act of these awards took place this Thursday with a concert attended by Los Reyes, Princesa Leonor and Infanta Sofía.

Name

The Princess of Asturias Awards were called the Prince of Asturias Awards between 1981 and 2014 . It was in October 2014 when the Board of Trustees of the Prince of Asturias Foundation approved that both the awards and the institution would be renamed Princess of Asturias, in reference to Leonor de Borbón, heir to the Crown, after the coronation of her father as Felipe VI from Spain.

They are awards that the heir to the Spanish throne gives to value the human, technical, scientific, cultural and social work carried out by people or institutions .

Origin

The origin of the Princess of Asturias Awards dates from the late 1970s by the journalist Graciano García . At first, the foundation was called the Principality of Asturias Foundation, and later it was renamed the Prince of Asturias Foundation.

The constitutional charter of the Foundation was signed on September 24, 1980 in the Covadonga Room of the Reconquista Hotel in Oviedo. The ceremony was presided over by the kings of Spain and Felipe de Borbón y Grecia, then Prince of Asturias.
