Do I have to pay for the hotel if I am confined for coronavirus? This is the question that may arise if we travel on vacation this summer and suddenly due to the fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic we end up confined in a hotel without being able to leave. We answer this question and explain what we should do if we find ourselves in this situation.
Do I have to pay for the hotel if I am confined for coronavirus?
The Delta variant has altered the holidays of many since the vast majority of autonomous communities are applying restrictions in order to be able to stop the increase in coronavirus infections, especially among young people. However, there are many people who are traveling between communities to enjoy their vacations, which can cause us to find ourselves in a situation in which in the face of an outbreak of contagion and because we are in close contact with someone positive or we are at possible risk of being one we end up confined in a hotel.
We do not forget what happened weeks ago when the positive of an Italian tourist in Tenerife caused the confinement of more than 1,000 people in his hotel. And it is not the only case, let us also remember the “macrobotellones” in Mallorca that caused the confinement of hundreds of young people who were celebrating the end of the year. But who pays for those hotels?
Do communities pay hotels where people are confined?
In the event that you are wondering who has to pay for these confinements in hotels or you doubt if perhaps you are going to have to pay the hotel account in the event that you end up confined, you should know that the hotels are first of all the who are in charge of assuming the expenses of confined clients, since the hotel chains have already agreed months ago that no one should be left unattended in this type of situation due to an economic issue.
But the good intention of the hotels does not make them really assume the cost of this confinement, but as stated in the Law of the Legal Regime of the Public Sector, the public administrations must be responsible for the cost of those affected for the decision to confine the people. So in the end, it is the communities or the State that must pay the hotels for the expense generated by the confinement of their clients.
What about insurance? Well, they do not cover any of the expenses derived from Covid-19. That is to say that no insurance will cover us that we become infected, that we have to be confined or even hospitalized since in case of contagion and being a pandemic declared by the WHO, we have to be treated by the public health of the country where we are according to they mark the protocols.
In short, if we are unlucky enough to end up confined in a hotel during the holidays, we will not have to pay anything since the State or the Community in which we are, which will assume that expense.
