It is a Herculean task, but precautions must be taken, says the DWD Executive Committee on Climate and Environment. According to an analysis, there will be more heavy rain in the future.
Offenbach – The German Weather Service (DWD), together with other authorities, sees an urgent need for action to strengthen protection against the effects of extreme weather in Germany.
Because of climate change, there will be more heavy rain, which will also be more intense, the DWD announced on Thursday in Offenbach. The weather service relies on an analysis of precipitation data from the years 2001 to 2020. The evaluation shows that heavy rain can occur anywhere in Germany, said Tobias Fuchs, DWD Director Climate and Environment.
Cities and municipalities are facing a Herculean task, said Peter Jakubowski from the Federal Institute for Building, Urban and Spatial Research (BBSR). Particularly urban regions would have to unseal surfaces so that they could absorb more water. At the same time, it has to be weighed up whether green areas are to be newly built. Since such measures mean additional costs, funding programs must be considered. dpa
