Mobile batteries that lasted 1 week: how was it possible?

Cell phone batteries are getting better and better. There are devices with 6000 milliamperes of capacity and that can be 2 weeks in rest. But if there is something that really stands out, it is the fact of thinking about the mobiles of the 90s and early 2000s. Surely you remember to charge them almost once a week, that is, we did not have that dependence on a charger like now. At present we are permanently in a state of alert, since if the battery of our phone runs out, a huge feeling of loneliness invades us.

Mobile batteries, that’s how they were

All the devices of the time had the peculiarity of having a removable battery. It was a standard, so if it deteriorated you could find a replacement and change it yourself. Now the mobiles have to go through the workshop to have the battery changed, or else, you have to have the tools and knowledge to do so. The batteries of those 20-year-old mobiles had 2 main components, nickel and cadmium. They were really efficient, although there was a handicap to overcome, the so-called memory effect. The batteries lost their effectiveness if they began to charge before they were exhausted. Currently this effect no longer occurs, although you must always have the recommendation not to leave your device to zero frequently, since its useful life suffers.

But having a device like the mythical Nokia 3210 was a guarantee of success. With a capacity of 1200 milliamps it provided a lot of durability, almost eternal. Now the batteries are more energy efficient, but rare is when with a single charge we go 2 days without having to recharge it. Despite living in a hyper-communicated and permanently connected world, there is a feeling of emptiness when we are left without that possibility.

So why did our battery last so long 20 years ago?

The answer is very simple, although we can give 2 logical answers. To begin we must refer to the technological field. Cell phones were what they were, phones. Now we find advanced machines with which the least we do is call. Think that a phone at that time had a small LCD screen and there were no colors. The functions were simple, sending and receiving SMS, possibility of enabling an internet connection, although it would be rare for you to do so, some simple games, agenda, alarm clock and little else. Neither bluetooth , nor Wi-Fi , nor app installation. Therefore, this leads us to find batteries that were in charge of simple processes that did not require too much energy. The real expense was made when we called, and the existing rates weren’t entirely cheap. We thought about it a lot when calling, not only money was going there, but also battery capacity.

On the other hand, it is enough to compare the time that we spent before with the phone in our hands and that of now. It is not at all unreasonable that every day 3 hours go by without doing much. How many times do you pick up your cell phone out of routine or boredom? Every time you do this, your efficient lithium battery has to power a generous screen , up to 7 inches in size. And it is with the bluetooth connected, the Wi-Fi connection transmitting, several apps open and with the antenna ready in case a call comes in. The battery level plummets when you do this. That is, the device is feeding too many things at the same time. As a result, go running in search of the charger or an external battery.

Although the batteries are increasingly efficient and there are works by various researchers that will allow you to have the feeling you had with your first device. Meanwhile, it correctly manages its use to be able to stretch it for as long as possible.
