Two dead in an apartment fire in Hamburg

The fire brigade was deployed with 85 men. Any help came too late for two people.

Hamburg – Two men were killed in a devastating apartment fire in Hamburg early on Sunday morning. A woman was critically injured, the police said.

During the extinguishing work, a man and a woman jumped out of an apartment on the second floor, the police said. They suffered life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency doctors and paramedics, the man died on site. The woman was taken to a hospital.

In the fire apartment on the ground floor, the rescuers found a lifeless man, the police said. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. Twelve other residents of the apartment building were brought to safety. The emergency services would have looked after them in a large-capacity ambulance. According to the fire brigade, three children and a woman who was taken to hospital with minor injuries were among those affected. The fire brigade was deployed with 85 men.

At first, the police could not say anything about the cause of the fire. Fire investigators from the State Criminal Police Office began to investigate the location of the fire after the flames had been extinguished. Shortly after 7:00 a.m., they alerted the fire brigade again because there were still embers in the apartment on fire.

The morning after the fire, the facade was blackened with smoke, and the charred windows were open. The fire department declared parts of the house to be uninhabitable. The residents had to be accommodated elsewhere. dpa
