A seemingly unequal fight: goat against bear. But it turns out differently than expected. In Canada, a grizzly bear does not survive a fight with a mountain goat.
Field – rugged cliffs, barren highlands and untouched nature: as beautiful as the hinterland in Canada with its lush natural and animal world may be – some of the natural spectacles that are offered there are just as brutal. On September 4, a hiker found the remains of a grizzly bear there. A subsequent autopsy revealed that the female bear was killed by a mountain goat.
The bear probably attacked them shortly before he died. The 70 kilogram bear was found dead near Burgess Pass near Field, British Columbia. The pass is located in Canada’s Yoho National Park in the Rocky Mountains.
Grizzly bear found dead: mountain goat probably responsible for the death of bears
The bear’s forensic autopsy revealed that a mountain goat stabbed him with its horns. Corresponding injuries can be found in the armpit and neck of the grizzly bear. The bear was flown out of the site on the day it was found. It was feared that the bear’s corpse would attract more predators.
A mountain goat’s defense strategy would be to defend itself with its sharp horns.
Grizzly bears focus on the victim’s head, neck and shoulders in their attacks, David Laskin, a wildlife ecologist for Parks Canada told the Guardian.
Goat death: Bears and goats are more likely to meet in Canada’s hinterland
According to Laskin, it is not uncommon for grizzly bears to attack mountain goats in order to eat them as prey. Bears have also been killed by mountain goats in the past. According to the ecologist, however, documentation is very rare.
Mountain goats, which are also known as mountain goats in Germany, can weigh up to 125 kilograms. Their black horns are up to around 30 centimeters long. Most of the time the goats move on mountain slopes. The rough terrain gives them any advantage over potential attackers such as the grizzly bear. (Lucas Maier)
Most recently, devastating forest fires struck the British Columbia region.
