The “final round” of the election campaign on television once again proved the nonsense of such formats – a TV criticism.
It wasn’t a successful event. It was due to both the moderation by Tina Hassel (ARD) and Theo Koll (ZDF), as well as the format that both of them had to fill. Whoever is of the opinion among the TV officials that “quick” rounds of questions would bring some kind of insight has never looked at something like that. Because instead of the presumably desired loosening up, here too, as in the “Triell” rounds, there was just hectic pace and a high degree of under-complexity. It speaks of a certain ignorance when the moderators repeatedly want a “short answer” so that they can whip through more topics. Then the rest of the intelligibility is lost – because things are not that simple.
It is true that foreign policy had now also been put up for discussion after the subject had been missing in the previous broadcasts. But the literally murderous EU border protection was dealt with in a “quick” question to CSU leader Markus Söder, and it was up to the left leader Janine Wissler to point out that the EU is still drowning people in the Mediterranean every day (while, by the way The arch-Catholic Poland encircled those seeking protection on the border with Belarus and practically exposed them to starvation, as an ARD report showed).
TV final round before the federal election in 2021: Markus Söder is allowed to chat
Keyword Söder: What was the man doing in this group? He is not a top candidate for the 2021 federal election and he had his party friend and ex-rival Armin Laschet sitting next to him. Tina Hassel’s sentence about Laschet was revealing after a statement from Söder: “You will say that now …” He did. The fact that the CSU has been sneaking a place in the various elephant groups for years is an indication of how the public broadcasters are dominated by the conservatives in the committees.
Final round before the federal election: Only one person is committed to coalitions – Laschet and Scholz are silent
It was not an informative event, as it was actually intended by those responsible for the broadcaster. The audience had to be informed if they wanted to gain a minimum of knowledge. And recognize the dumplings. Like Armin Laschet’s at the beginning, when he claimed that radicalization began on the Internet. Not correct. You don’t need the internet for gun ownership and assassination; that can only intensify extremism. Annalena Baerbock therefore rightly called for the weapons law to be tightened. The party representatives: inside sat behind desks that looked like modernized box cars from the fair, ready to head straight for the opposite, and exuded a certain aggressiveness. The lack of recognizable structure also contributed to the hectic process. Who answered which questions seemed absolutely arbitrary. Then there were the constant interruptions. Theo Koll interrupted Janine Wissler right at the beginning, only Söder was allowed to chat. And on the other hand, FDP boss Christian Lindner simply ignored the question of his increasingly wandering colleague Wolfgang Kubicki.

The positions on housing construction, the debt brake, tax cuts and corona vaccinations were discussed again without a new aspect emerging. In terms of foreign policy, however, Alice Weidel was allowed to rail against the “club” against China that no one had unpacked. Once on the move, the Nazi friend rose to an eulogy for a thorium factory in China, but was rightly strangled by Koll.

Federal election 2021: for Armin Laschet, climate change must be “fun”
The question and answer session about the personal “waiver” of the guests turned out to be rather embarrassing. While Laschet indulged his uncle image and claimed that climate change should also be “fun”, Olaf Scholz was at least honest enough to say that he is traveling in an armored car and with an entourage.
In the final round on possible future coalitions, Scholz once again struck stakes against the left by saying that we need the protection of the Constitution, NATO and a good relationship with the USA, while Annalena Baerbock found the smartest formulation of the evening (and therefore also twice): “A government without strong green leadership is like a climate without protection.” (Daland Segler)
