The New England Patriots were by far the most active team on the first day of the Free Agency – but the Pats obviously haven’t had enough: New England also signs tight end Hunter Henry.
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, Henry will be awarded a three-year contract for up to $ 37.5 million in New England. Of these, 25 million are guaranteed.
The Ex-Charger is thus the second high-priced tight end that the Pats sign in this Free Agency: New England opened the market on Monday with the surprisingly expensive contract for Ex-Titans tight end Jonnu Smith.
Both together paint a clear picture of where the journey for the Patriots should go. In the preseason, New England probably had the worst weapons arsenal in the league and, especially in the tight ends – despite two third-round rookies – not nearly enough quality. The Patriots could hardly play in 12-personell (one running back, two tight ends, two wide receivers) and suffered in the red zone as well.
Smith and Henry are now giving New England this opportunity – and both complement each other well: Henry more as the more classic in-line tight end, Smith as the player who can be pushed around, who can also take on an end around with his athleticism can. Together with Speedster Nelson Agholor, who was also committed to the start of the Free Agency, a clear framework is now being created for the Pats Offense 2021.
