The future of Ben Roethlisberger has apparently been clarified. As the Pittsburgh Steelers announced, the quarterback has agreed with the owners to continue the cooperation.
Accordingly, the 38-year-old had successful discussions with franchise owner Art Rooney II. “The next step is to work on Ben’s contract,” said Rooney.
Roethlisberger’s contract is still valid, but due to a cap hit over 40 million dollars that will occur next season, the contract will be adjusted. That would give the Steelers more leeway in designing the roster.
Separating from Big Ben would have saved the Steelers $ 22.25 million in cap savings. Money that the Steelers actually need: 19 players can leave the team with expiring contracts, including top receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.
Aditi Kinkhabwala, Steelers reporter for the NFL Network , had already reported an agreement in advance of the statement on Wednesday after a conversation with Roethlisberger’s advisor Ryan Tollner.
He told her: “They want Ben back and will contact me soon to address his cap situation. As we have made clear since the end of the season, we are very open to creative adjustments to his contract in order to be the best possible Lead the team to the field. “
Last season, the Steelers had slumped radically after eleven wins in a row. Finally, Pittsburgh failed after a bitter bankruptcy against the Cleveland Browns, in the course of which Roethlisberger threw four touchdowns, but also four interceptions, already in the wild card round of the playoffs.
