Blockbuster trade in the NFL! The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed a trade for quarterback Carson Wentz with the Indianapolis Colts. In return, the Eagles received two draft picks.
Wentz succeeds the resigned Philip Rivers, who was only active in Indianapolis for one year.
As part of the deal, the Eagles will receive a third round pick in the upcoming draft and a second round pick in 2022, which is, however, linked to the 28-year-old’s season. Wentz’s lavish contract means that the Eagles will have to raise dead money of $ 33.8 million for the coming season.
Wentz was the Eagles’ second overall pick in the 2016 draft and signed a contract extension to the end of the 2024 season in the summer of 2019 for a total of $ 128 million, of which $ 107.9 million was guaranteed.
After serious injuries (including a torn cruciate ligament) in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, however, he was barely able to return to his former top form and was ultimately put on the bench for the final four games of the 2020 season in favor of rookie Jalen Hurts.
This ultimately led to Wentz calling for a trade and not deviating from it even after head coach Doug Pederson was fired. In Indianapolis he now meets his former offensive coordinator Frank Reich from times together in Philadelphia. He’s now head coach of the Colts.
