Greek islands: Refugee bodies washed up on beaches

Dead people wash up on Greek island beaches. These are probably refugees from the Middle East.

Kos – Numerous bodies have washed up on the beaches of the Greek islands of Kos, Ios, Paris, Sifnos, Folegandros and Naxos in recent weeks. According to local media, the dead people were already in an advanced state of decomposition. This is reported, for example, by the Greece newspaper.

According to Greek authorities, these are very likely migrants who previously drowned.

The victims are apparently asylum seekers who apparently wanted to make their way from Turkey to the Greek coast and from there to western and northern Europe. Shortly before Christmas, for example, two ships sank in the open sea off the islands of Paros and Folegandros. There were many people on board, including children.

The identification of the corpses should now take place across countries. According to their own statements, the Greek authorities are in contact with authorities from Afghanistan, Egypt, Syria and Palestine. (tu/KNA)
