Aeroméxico announced the opening of two new routes from Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), to Mérida and Villahermosa, starting next April, making it the third Mexican airline to confirm its operation at the new airport.
“The decision is the result of the analysis of the network, location and customer needs, as well as the use of the airport infrastructure in that terminal, which opens as a new option for air connectivity to and from the center of the Mexican Republic” the company said in a statement.
The airline’s announcement comes just over a month after the inauguration of the new airport, and is preceded by a refusal that, until a few months ago, had persisted about not operating at the new airport, which is still being built on the base military air of Santa Lucía, in the State of Mexico.
“This announcement gives us great pleasure because, thanks to the efforts of all of us who make up Grupo Aeroméxico, we are in the final stage of a profound restructuring and transformation process that will allow us to emerge stronger and make decisions like this for the benefit of connectivity. of our country, the service to our customers and the generation of jobs,” said Andrés Conesa, general director of Aeroméxico, quoted in a statement.
Since 2019, Aeroméxico has been reluctant to operate in Santa Lucía, due to the network business model with which it operates.
“We need to operate in a single airport. It makes no sense to operate in two so close, change passengers, jump 15 kilometers and segment operations. (All of this) raises costs,” Conesa said at an aviation forum in October 2019.
“For a low-cost airline it might make sense to have its base in another airport, but for us it is key and fundamental to operate in a hub that is competitive with other connection centers such as Miami, Dallas, Panama, Bogotá,” he said at the time. . Last November, the airline reaffirmed its position on the AIFA during the celebration of the Tianguis Turístico, in Mérida, Yucatán.
Aeromexico joins Volaris, the first airline to announce two routes to Tijuana and Cancun from AIFA in past months. Likewise, Viva Aerobus previously confirmed flights to Monterrey and Guadalajara, and will even provide transportation from the Central de Autobuses del Norte to reach the new airport.
