Red List of Threatened Species: African Forest Elephant threatened with extinction

Threatened species are collected on the Red List. More than 40,000 species are currently threatened with extinction.

Kassel – From wolves to gorillas: more than 142,500 species have been assessed to date on the Red List of Threatened Species. However, more than 40,000 species are threatened with extinction. That is about 28 percent of all assessed species.

However, there is not one red list. They are available from different organizations and sometimes for different areas. At the international level, that of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is best known. It was founded in 1964 and aims to assess more than 160,000 species. In 2020, around 33,000 animal species were classified as threatened*. With more than 40,000 endangered animal and plant species, this is more than ever before.

Percentage of Assessed Species are Critically Endangered (IUCN)
amphibians 41 percent
mammals 26 percent
conifers 34 percent
birds 13 percent
Sharks & Rays 37 percent
reef corals 33 percent
Selected crustaceans 28 percent
reptiles 21 percent

Red List of Threatened Species 2022: Wolf is also in danger of extinction

Germany also has its own Red List. The wolf* can also be found on it, for example. However, it cannot be compared with the IUCN list. Above all, it looks more at the population development of the species. The IUCN list is geared more towards the endangerment of the species concerned.

But there are also some positive effects of protection management, which the Red List shows. For example, the population of European bison was able to increase again.

The giant bronze gecko is also threatened with extinction. He was assessed in 2020 and classified as threatened. There is also a decline in dragonflies, mainly due to the destruction of wetlands.

The eastern and western gorillas are also listed on the Red List in declining population. In addition, almost two thirds of the species that occur at hydrothermal vents in the deep sea are threatened with extinction.

Forest Elephant is Critically Endangered: Red List has listed more than 40,000 species as threatened

The African forest elephant is now threatened with extinction. In 31 years, forest elephant populations have plummeted by more than 86 percent, according to the WWF. Since 2008, elephants have been falling victim to poaching more and more often. On the other hand, they are losing more and more parts of their habitat due to humans.
