Investigation against Rudy Giuliani – lawyer hopes for Trump's help

Rudy Giuliani hopes for Donald Trump’s support in court. After reviewing the seized materials, Giuliani could not be the only one to blame.

New York – After the electronic devices of Donald Trump’s ex-attorney Rudy Giuliani were seized in an FBI raid last week, Giuliani’s attorney Alan Dershowitz is now hoping for Donald Trump’s support in court. CNN reported on Tuesday (May 4th, 2021).

Giuliani probably intends to file a legal challenge against the search of the devices, according to Dershowitz, who does not represent Giuliani formally, but works in an advisory capacity. Giuliani also wants his former clients to try to prevent the prosecutors from reviewing the material.

Raid on Rudy Giuliani – material covered by legal secret?

Robert Costello, also an attorney for Giuliani, said shortly after the warrant was served to search Giuliani’s residence and Manhattan office that the devices “are filled with material covered by legal, tenant and other constitutional privileges is “. Giuliani also assumes that these materials are protected by legal confidentiality, according to Dershowitz. Giuliani also compared the searches with Stasi methods.

“I hope the people whose information is confidential, like Donald Trump, will join the lawsuit and say, look, you can’t see my stuff,” said retired Harvard Law School professor and lawyer for Giuliani, Alan Dershowitz , across from CNN. His career is said to be primarily focused on individual civil liberties. In the first impeachment proceedings, Dershowitz was on the defense team of the then president.

Donald Trump and the Ukraine affair: searches at Giuliani mark a turning point

The background to the searches is Giuliani’s involvement in the Ukraine affair, in which he is said to have supported the then US President Donald Trump in his actions against Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden. US media had repeatedly reported that Giuliani’s prosecution had so far been blocked by Trump. But since the Democrat Joe Biden is now in office, the seizure of the materials marks a turning point.

The Ministry of Justice is said to have received a first search warrant for Giuliani’s Apple Cloud account as early as 2019, as Costello and Giuliani learned last Friday (April 30, 2021). Costello asked why additional seizures were required as communications would already be available through the cloud. In the course of the investigation, contact with dozens of Ukrainians and Americans is said to have been sought, according to Costello. Including government officials or federal employees who are in contact with the former US Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch.

Search of Rudy Giuliani: Former mayor prepares for legal battle

Giuliani’s legal team is expected to expand to include more lawyers as the former New York mayor prepares for a legal battle, Giuliani’s attorney Costello told CNN on Monday evening (May 3, 2021). However, there is currently no coordination between Giuliani and Trump’s legal team. When asked about a statement from Trump, CNN received no response.

In 2018, Trump’s other former lawyer, Michael Cohen, went to court after prosecutors raided his home, office and hotel room. Cohen’s attorneys first requested an injunction to prevent investigators from reviewing the seized material. After a federal judge denied that request, Cohen’s attorneys successfully sought the appointment of a “special master,” a court-appointed independent agency to review the material and determine which documents were confidential.

The “special master” finally came to the conclusion that the confidentiality status only applies to a small part of the thousands of pages of the confiscated documents. (Anna Charlotte Groos)
