As with carbon dioxide (CO2), its levels can increase due to human action, either direct or indirect.
Methane is a very powerful gas that favors global warming, and each kilogram of it heats the planet in 100 years 23 times more than the same mass of carbon dioxide. However, since there is much less CH4 than CO2, methane does not do as much damage and has a less important influence on the greenhouse effect.
Although not toxic, this gas can cause severe burns if it ignites. In addition, it reacts very negatively when in contact with halogens and oxidants. Not content with it, it can also become suffocating, since it has the ability to displace oxygen in a closed space.
Among its most frequent uses, CH4 can be transported as a refrigerated liquid or used in industrial chemical processes to produce hydrogen, methanol or acetic acid, among others.
