Eisoptrophobia is the irrational panic of being reflected in mirrors. Although it may be a symptom of some psychic problem, in a way it is part of the ancestral fears of the human being before that other reality that these objects return to us.
For this reason, in some cultures, mirrors are prohibited, and in others, for example, they are covered during the time of mourning after the death of a loved one, for fear of their image appearing.
This syndrome is also known as catoptrophobia , and those who suffer from it sometimes experience episodes of short or heavy breathing, sweating, or anxiety in the vicinity of a reflective surface . Some eisoptrophobics fear them because of their low self-esteem , and avoiding seeing and judging themselves can gradually develop into an aversion to mirrors.
