Kyiv/New York – Unlike Vladimir Putin, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not yet left his country during the war. “I’m staying in Kyiv,” he assured in early March, a few days after the start of the Russian invasion. Also due to security concerns, the Ukrainian President refrained from traveling to other countries. He spoke to many parliaments via video, and he was also connected virtually to the Bundestag. That could change in September.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York? President of Ukraine could be on site at UN meeting
Selenskyj could possibly be at the general debate of the UN General Assembly in New York in mid-September. Security Council circles confirmed that Ukrainians are planning to visit Zelenskyy at the annual meeting of dozens of heads of state and government. “We are prepared for the visit of any representative, including the president,” spokesman for the Ukrainian mission to the United Nations, Anatoly Slenko, told the dpa news agency.
Zelenskyj is listed as a speaker on the previous list of the largest UN event in mid-September – but Slenko emphasized that this could change. It is “still unclear” whether the trip will actually take place.
Ukraine negotiations: Biden, Scholz and Lavrov also attended UN meetings
The general debate of the UN General Assembly will take place this year from September 20 for several days at the UN headquarters in Manhattan. Speakers include US President Joe Biden, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. It is the first meeting since the start of the Ukraine war.
In diplomatic circles, a speech by Zelenskyj, at least via video, is expected anyway. However, this is considered to be less impressive than a personal journey. The presence of the Ukrainian President among the ranks of powerful heads of state in New York and in the Great Hall of the General Assembly is likely to have significant symbolic effects during the war.
