The adamantium or adamantium, a term that comes from the Greek adamas , "indomitable", refers to a type of mythical material of extreme hardness , in some cases of a metallic nature and in others linked in some way – almost always by its brightness – with the diamond. In fact, adamantine is an adjective used in Geology to describe minerals that have a luster similar to that of adamantine.
The classical sources use the word to name especially resistant objects and refer to adamantium as the only thing capable of hurting or restraining the deities. This is the case, for example, of the chains with which Loki, the Norse trickster god, is tied to the underworld. Although it belongs to the universe of fantasy and science fiction , some ancient sources also call a form of corundum, a gemstone of great hardness, adamantine.
