Especially for those users who do not have much experience, there is no doubt that trying to access a certain web page and having an error code in response can be very frustrating, especially when we do not know what it means and, above all, why it has appeared.
On previous occasions we have already explained what some really common error codes consist of, such as the 505 error or the traditional 404 error (which becomes a warning that said web page no longer exists). But what about error 500 and error 502 ?
What is a 500 error?
A 500 error is displayed in the browser when the server cannot access the URL requested by the user for some reason that it is not able to identify. That is, it is an error that appears for an unidentifiable cause during the processing of the request sent by the browser to the server.
As with all other error codes, there are various error messages that can be displayed. Although in most cases it is usually one of the following:
- 500 Internal Server Error
- Internal Server Error
- HTTP 500 – Internal Server Error
- Temporary Error (500)
- HTTP Error 500
- 500 Error
- 500. That’s an error
Along with the 404 error, it is true that we are facing one of the most common HTTP status codes , which occurs simply when an error has occurred when trying to access the server, and the system is not able to give more details about the reason. (that is, about what originally would have happened).
What are the causes of a 500 error?
In all cases the incident comes from the web page we are trying to access , so it has nothing to do with the user. That is, unlike the 404 error, which can arise after manually entering a URL address incorrectly, in the case of the 500 error it is related only to the web page and / or the server itself where it is hosted.
Among the causes that can influence its appearance we can mention the following:
- A response time has been exceeded. This usually occurs when a script takes a long time to respond.
- Server under maintenance. When a server is under maintenance and a user tries to access it.
- A script error. A script consists of a small program, with a set of commands, that must be executed to display a web page. If a script required to display it contains an error that prevents normal access to the URL requested by the user, a 500 error is displayed.
And what about the 502 error?
Although we may think of it as similar to or similar to a 500 error, a 502 error actually displays when there is a problem between the server and the Internet gateway . That is, it appears as a warning that there is an incorrect gateway , and it usually appears when there is a problem outside the browser or our computer. For this reason, the most common warning is “Error 502 – Bad Gateway”.
There are several reasons why this error code can appear. For example, there may be a firewall that blocks the request, the server is down or when there is an error in the communication between the different servers.
Is there anything the user can do to fix a 500 error?
Since the 500 error depends on the web page the user is trying to access, or the server itself, there is nothing we can originally do .
However, since a 500 error is usually a temporary error code, a good option is to refresh or visit the page later . If the issue has been fixed, it is quite likely that that particular URL will be available again soon.
What about a 502 error?
Reload the page
A possible solution could be to refresh or update the web page we are trying to access, and which nevertheless shows the 502 error. Thus, if the problem has been solved, the URL could be accessible again.
Otherwise, many experts advise closing all browser windows, waiting between one to two minutes, and re-entering the URL to check if it is already accessible or not.
Clear browser cache
Our browser caches different files from the web pages we access in order to access them later much faster. Because of this, it is very possible that a 502 error continues to appear when in fact it has already been resolved.
Precisely, when checking whether or not it is a current error message, the only available solution is to clear the cache and cookies of our browser .
