IPhone charging problems: what to do and how to fix it

Almost every day, which will depend on how long our device has been since we bought it and the use we have made of it, it is common for all iPhone owners to use the Lightning cable (or compatible Qi charger) to charge it. However, it can sometimes happen that instead of seeing the charging indicator, nothing just happens.

If we have unplugged and plugged the charger back into the device several times, and we still continue to encounter the problem that the charging process does not start, it is clear that something is happening.

Although it can be really frustrating that our device “refuses” to charge, luckily there are some steps we can take to diagnose the cause of the possible problem and, above all, at least try to solve it easily.

Use another Lightning cable

Especially when the Lightning cable is not in very good condition, it may simply not function normally anymore. In fact, one of the basic steps to follow has to do with taking a much closer look at the iPhone charging cable.

It is advisable to make sure that both heads of the cables are connected safely and correctly, either to the iPhone itself or to the power supply.

We can try using a different Lightning cable . If the iPhone then begins the charging process, it is clear that the problem has to do with the cable (or the plug).

Try another iPhone charger

Actually there are so many ways available to recharge the battery of our iPhone, that the problem can be very varied. However, if you are in the habit of charging your device using a wall outlet, then the problem may be with the outlet or plug.

As with the Lightning cable, you can try charging the iPhone with another charger . Alternatively, you can try to dispose of the original charger for now, and try to do so by connecting the device through your Mac or PC. If it starts to charge, the problem may be with the charger itself.

Cleaning dirt from the Lightning port

You may be surprised to find that the different ports on an iPhone “attract” dirt and dust. When there is a lot of debris embedded in it, such as dirt, dust, or lint, it is normal for a time to come when the charging process cannot begin.

If when observing the Lightning port we observe the presence of a lot of dirt, it is essential to proceed to clean it . But be careful, it is essential to do it carefully, and always with the iPhone turned off.

One of the simplest solutions is to use a compressed air blower . But if you don’t have one, you can use a small cotton swab to gently clean the iPhone port.

When we see that the iPhone port is perfectly clean, you could try charging it again.

Force restart the iPhone

If none of the above options have worked, a possible solution is to restart the device . To do this, we must remove the cable and follow the steps that we propose below. Of course, they will vary a bit depending on the iPhone model you have:

  • If you have an iPhone 8 or higher. Press and immediately release the volume “+” button, and immediately press and release the volume “-” button. Finally, press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
  • If you have an iPhone 7/7 Plus. Press and hold the volume “-” button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
  • If you have an iPhone 6S / 6S Plus or earlier. Press and hold the home button together with the power button, until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

Finally, when the process of force restarting the iPhone finishes, you should try charging it again with a Lightning cable.
