While last year the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 went on sale, we also knew that, throughout the first month of the console’s life, SONY had distributed 3.4 million to the different distribution chains, which would be practically equivalent to the number of sales , especially if we take into account the shortage that SONY would be having of the PS5 around the world.
However, although the company is preparing for an increase in demand throughout this year, with the forecast of distributing close to 10 million consoles before the month of March, it is evident that there are still users who continue to use the PS4 . Or that, even if they acquire the new version, they continue to use the old one.
If so, it is possible that at some point or other you have considered the possibility of setting up a VPN on the PlayStation 4 . And it is that, although it is true that games do not exactly come to mind when we talk about a VPN (or virtual private network), it is true that it offers an interesting diversity of uses.
For example, from connecting to servers around the world, which would offer us the possibility of buying from the PlayStation Store in other regions or enjoying games with players from another side of the world, the VPN would help to encrypt our Internet connection , With which we would be able to protect our personal data from any user who may spy on the connection.
Unfortunately, Sony does not provide the steps to follow to be able to set up a VPN on the PS4, but that does not mean that it is not entirely possible. Here’s how you can do it.
Method 1: With the help of the computer
The use of our computer for the connection does not require any additional hardware, so it could be a simple and straightforward option. Thus, we can connect the VPN directly to a PC or Mac, run the VPN and secure the connection of the PS4 in this way.
First of all, you need to hire a VPN service, install it and configure it on your computer . Then, we must link the PlayStation 4 to the computer on which we have installed the VPN connection, which will require an Ethernet cable. Now we have to connect the computer and we will be ready to tell the software to connect the PS4 to the Internet.
Once we have installed and configured the VPN, we must go to the Windows Control Panel , right-click on the Internet Access icon and go to Network and Internet Settings , to finally click on Change adapter options .
We must search for the VPN connection and click the right mouse button to bring up a context menu where we can then click on the Properties option. We choose the Share option, and now we click next to the Allow network users to connect through the Internet connection of this computer .
Once this is done, we go to the PS4 Settings system, click on Network Settings and then on Set up an Internet connection . Now we choose the option to connect with a LAN cable, and finally we click on Easy Configuration , which will make the PS4 automatically search for the connection on its own.
In this sense, the PlayStation 4 should be able to handle the configuration of the connection through the VPN without making any manual changes.
Method 2: With the help of the router
We now come to possibly another of the simplest methods: using the VPN with the PS4 through the router . To do this, once the VPN service is contracted, we proceed to log in to the router by entering the IP address in the web browser.
In case we are configuring the VPN connection manually, a configuration file from the VPN provider will be necessary. Then, it’s just a matter of importing it into the router’s control panel and proceeding to activate the service.
Once this is done, we look up the IP address when we are connected to make sure everything works as it should. In this way, we go to Configuration and Network , select Configure a connection and, finally, click on the Easy method.
