If you have been using a computer at home or at work for a few years, it is very likely that you still remember how enormously tortuous it was to connect to the Internet through the modem and the telephone cable, when the speed did not exceed 56K and the entire block of Neighbors found out that we were accessing the network (by the sounds that the modem made every time we wanted to connect).
Fortunately, with the arrival of ADSL and later of fiber optics, a world of possibilities opened up before our eyes, considerably improving the speed of both uploading and downloading data, and with it, the arrival of a wide range of variety of online services, such as content reproduction platforms via streaming, either through a computer, mobile phone or Smart TV.
And although every time we contract a new Internet service, it is the operator’s technician who carries out the installation, sometimes we may need to learn how to connect a computer to the Internet on our own. We explain how to do it via WiFi, or with an Ethernet cable.
Connecting our computer to the Internet with an Ethernet cable
First of all, we must make sure that the network is working correctly. This means that the modem must be connected to the Internet, and the router (if used) must also be connected to the modem. Also, both appliances must be on and working.
However, remember that some modems work as a router at the same time , so it is not necessary to use a single modem and router when the modem already fulfills this function.
To start the process we need an Ethernet cable , which consists of a cable necessary to connect network elements (as, for example, it could be the case of our computer) to a modem or a router connected to the Internet.
The process is very simple. We just have to look for a free Ethernet port , and proceed to connect one end to the modem or router, and the other end to the computer. Of course, in case our computer does not have this connection, it is necessary to get a USB to Ethernet adapter .
We proceed to connect the router or modem to the computer through this cable , and wait for the computer to connect to the Internet .
Connecting our computer to the Internet via WiFi connection
In case, instead of an Ethernet cable, you want to connect to the network with the help of the WiFi connection, the process is slightly easier since you do not need a physical cable, but it is necessary to know the name of the wireless network and, if it is protected (always recommended), know the password to connect to it .
We only have to turn on the WiFi connectivity in the device from which we want to connect, and choose the name of the wireless network . Click on the Connect button, and if it is protected, we must enter the network password .
If everything is correct, and we have not made a mistake with any letter, we must wait for the computer to connect to the network .
