The most used emojis by Spaniards in 2020

Emojis have changed the way humans communicate. They have become so firmly established in everyday communication streams that even in 2015, Oxford Dictionaries chose an emoji known as “the face with tears of joy” as their ” word of the year.”

And it is that every day we exchange millions and millions of emojis on all social networks: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or in mobile messaging programs such as WhatsApp or Telegram. And it is that their success lies in that they easily help us inject so much tone and body language into what would otherwise be only plain text and more easily misrepresented.

In Spain, as in the rest of the world, emojis are massively used every day , every hour, every minute by millions of people of all ages.

What is the emoji that is all the rage in Spain?

According to the Statista study carried out in 2020, the online statistics portal in collaboration with YouGov Spain, the emoji “crying with laughter” is the most used by Spaniards, with 56% of the study participants , followed by “sending a kiss ” , with 55% of participants and the smiling emoji, with about 49% of the study participants.

The next most used emojis are: “thumbs up”, with 45%, “clapping / clapping” , with 44%, the heart symbol , with 35%, the emoji that shows the eyes in the shape of a heart , with 33%, the sad crying emoji, with 17%, the victory symbol , with 9% of those surveyed, the monkey emojis -blind, deaf, dumb-, with 9% also, as well as the flamenco emoji, with 9%; the remaining and fewer employees would be the smiling poop emoji , with 7% and without emojis , 6%. It is curious that 6% of those surveyed stated that they do not use any emoji regularly in their conversations.

The emojis that are yet to come

A few months ago, the Unicode Consortium or Unicode Consortium , the NGO in charge of coordinating the development of the Unicode standard, revealed the new emojis that will arrive on our mobiles this year, and that will be integrated in the next versions of WhatsApp, Twitter and the rest of platforms and operating systems.

There will be a total of 117 images or 117 new emojis that will expand the usual fun and diverse visual dictionary of our messages through social networks. Among the emojis expected to arrive in the second half of 2020 -to iOS and macOS in the months of October or November, for example- are: bubble tea, smiling face with tears, parents bottle-feeding a baby , the transgender flag, a woman in a tuxedo, as well as a gender-neutral person or a veiled man. Holiday emojis also include new additions, such as a gender-inclusive alternative for Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, called Mx. Claus, in order to have a more consistent set of gender options across the board.
