WhatsApp, the real-time messaging application that has become the inseparable companion of almost every smartphone in the world, has many millions of users who, in turn, are connected to many groups. So what happens if we want to tag or mention someone, a particular person, a group? How do you do it? And do you know how it is reflected on the phone? Today we will explain it to you step by step and we will mark the difference between mention and quote.
Mentions
It is a special type of allusion, very useful to specify which person in a chat or conversation we are referring to (especially when there are many people within a group in question). Mentions only work in groups, not in private conversations and imply that the message is directed to a specific user.
How to use the mention? Follow these steps:
- Go to the phone menu
- Locate the WhatsApp app
- Click on the WhatsApp icon.
- Go to the Chats tab.
- Touch the “Group” you want to chat with
- (If you don’t see the group you’re looking for, you can search for it by name. Tap the magnifying glass icon at the top of the screen, then type in the group’s name and you can select it from the search results.)
- To mention someone in a group, type the “@” symbol and select the person’s name from the pop-up list.
- When you mention someone in this way, a notification will be sent to that person stating that they have been referred.
- Remember that mentioning someone in a group chat will override any mute settings you have set for that group.
Example: “Hello @Alicia, do you want us to make a video call this afternoon? Is it good for you after eating? ”.
As you will see when writing the mention, WhatsApp will highlight the person’s name in light blue, including the at sign before the name. If you want to add more people, that is, more mentions in the same message, you can also do it. There is no type of restriction in this regard.
Example: “Who wants to play an online game of Terraforming Mars this afternoon? @Christian, @Curro, @ Belén, @Marta, @Diego? “
Is there a difference when the message is sent? Not really. It is sent as usual, but the mentions are highlighted in blue as we have commented before. Quotes generate a visual message of the comment we are replying to; that is, quote the message and state your response to it.
