With the heir to the Mate X, the Chinese company continues to bet on the booklet format, instead of the shell.

Huawei has been another of those manufacturers that has decided to keep the launch date of its products, despite the non-celebration of the MWC due to the coronavirus. The Chinese company has announced a new phone via streaming.

Despite the criticism of its first folding smartphone – the Huawei Mate X – for its size and roughness compared to Samsung’s first proposal, the company has decided to continue delving into this type of device with a new model.

The Mate XS is the continuation of the Mate X and its commercial version, since Huawei’s first folding did not go beyond a showcase . He never made it to the stores.

Following in the wake of the Motorola Razr, Samsung has decided to give its smartphones a ’90 degree turn’ and make them fold horizontally instead of vertically. However, Huawei is still in its thirteen and does not get off the original formula of the Mate X: it prefers the booklet shape over the shell.

The Mate XS, flexible like itself

The Huawei Mate XS is considerably thinner than its prototype version. The terminal has an OLED screen that when deployed reaches 8.1 inches . When divided, it stays in a 6.6-inch panel and a 6.38-inch panel. The entire front is covered with a double layer of polyimide to make the screen more resistant.

The display includes in-house FullView technology for vivid color viewing and great detail from anywhere.

The Chinese firm has endowed the hinge with zirconium, a material with which it wants to give it greater durability, taking into account the number of times it will be bent and unfolded.

One of the aspects that the Mate XS stands out for is its smart multiscreen . The panel can be used fully stretched, but divided into two parts, to be able to do two tasks at the same time, use two applications at the same time, take notes while viewing messages, etc.

The foldable phone comes with Huawei’s most powerful chipset, the Kirin 990 5G, ready to access fifth-generation networks. Added to this is a two-core neural processing unit (UPN) plus a small core that will serve as the basis for the future possibilities that artificial intelligence will allow. Huawei’s cooling system uses flexible bionic graphite to balance the heat, something not easy in a terminal that folds.

In terms of autonomy, this Huawei has 4,500 mAh . In addition, it comes with a 55w fast charge , which allows you to charge 85% of its battery in half an hour.

In the security section, the phone includes a fingerprint sensor on one side. Actually, it corresponds to the button used to turn the device on and off.

Cameras on the hinge

The Mate XS hinge is not just an element to facilitate its folding. It houses a system of 4 Leica cameras that are divided into a wide angle lens, a tele, another ultra wide angle lens and a TOF and can be used as front or rear cameras. With a 40 megapixel sensor, night photos are no longer a problem.

As an eye-catching feature, the smartphone includes dual-screen mirror shooting for two people on one side of the phone and the other can be immortalized simultaneously.

Release date and price

The Mate XS would be quite a bit more expensive than the other foldable phones on the market. In particular, it would cost 1,000 euros more than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip. Huawei will sell it for about 2,500 euros in its configuration of 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal space.

Its higher cost is logical, on the other hand, since the screen surface is much higher than the Korean phone. It will be available the third week of March, as announced by its manufacturer.
