Nuria Oliver: 'We live surrounded by artificial intelligence'

I have worked for some years with Nuria Olver in one of the great companies in this country. And the passion he exudes when he speaks , knowingly, about everything that surrounds artificial intelligence (AI), is overwhelming. You just have to hear her speak, and see her, how she lives what she says, and how she says what she believes is and will be one of the triggers of the Transformation that we are already experiencing.

Nuria Oliver has been researching in the field of artificial intelligence for more than 20 years, and in her time at the Media Lab at MIT (Massachusets Institute of Technology) she has met some of the most prodigious minds in this field of technology. One of them, Andrew Ng, was his partner in the MIT Media Lab, he was the founder of Google Brain, and today he is one of the leading figures of the Chinese company Baidu, which is one of the leading companies in the world in AI.

Nuria, who today develops her scientific work at Vodafone Corporation, and collaborates with the Government in the development of a White Paper on Artificial Intelligence, has spoken clearly with Muy Inteligencia Artificial about what it is today and hopes that technology will be tomorrow that is undoubtedly already revolutionizing society and industries. He points out that ” We must not be afraid of artificial intelligence. It is not something of the future. Today we live surrounded by AI .”

We use artificial intelligence today, above all, on our mobiles or Smartphone. Internet search results, or how we go from one place to another, what friends we have on social networks, what recommendations are made to us, what news we read, what movies we watch, what books we buy, etc., are some of the applications that we already have. We drive today from mobile devices, and we do not think that they are driven by algorithms based on AI and data analysis.

And Nuria emphasizes that we do not have to be suspicious that job losses will occur, because in every revolution this happens. Although the appearance of new jobs, which even today we cannot imagine, will be even greater. “The best example”, says Nuria Oliver, “we live it today. The best paying jobs didn’t exist fifteen years ago . Everything related to mobile programming, Internet searches, cloud management, data scientists, etc., are the most in-demand jobs today ”.

What the Scientific Director of Vodafone has made clear is that we have to achieve an AI that is fair, that does not discriminate, that does not magnify the difference between people, that is accountable to know who is responsible when supported decisions are being made by algorithms. “And it also has to be transparent, to understand how algorithms work, and ethics so that algorithms act in accordance with a set of values and principles that we accept as a Society.”
