Trak, the homemade sperm counter

Spanish semen is in crisis, frustrating the wishes of many men eager to become fathers. According to the Valencian Infertility Institute (IVI), 30% of the causes that prevent pregnancy are due to male factors, including the low number of sperm.

IVI specialists give a figure: the ideal to conceive is “to have more than 39 million sperm in the ejaculate, with at least 32% of sperm with progressive movement and at least 4% of normal forms. When you have quantities minors the probability of pregnancy drops considerably “.

If you are going to get to work to be a father and want to be more safe (reproduction is not an exact science and many factors count), there is a gadget that can help you: it is called Trak, and it is a portable device that will count in the tranquility of your home the number of sperm in your ejaculations.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just approved it for sale, and you can pre-order it now, although shipments won’t begin until October. Its price: about 140 euros plus shipping costs.

How does it work? You have to do what you already know first. Then you deposit a small sample of your semen in a disposable cartridge that is inserted into the base of the Trak. The electric motor of the device rotates the base and this centrifugation separates the different components of the fluid. The part that contains the sperm goes into a chamber similar to a mercury thermometer, where it is marked if you have a low, moderate or optimal number of gametes (male sex cells).

In addition, the device is paired with a mobile app that allows you to compare your sperm levels at different times and offers you tips to increase its quantity, improve the quality of your semen and increase the chances of pregnancy.
