At least mathematically . This is the controversial conclusion of the study presented by researcher Laura Mersini-Houghton of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill (USA) and whose approach was already published last June in the journal Physics Letters B.
“I am still in shock. We have been studying this problem for more than 50 years and this solution gives us a lot to think about, ”says Mersini-Houghton.
The scientific community has maintained for decades that black holes were formed when a massive star collapsed under its own gravity at a single point in space, forming around it an invisible membrane known as the “event horizon” where any passing object by this area it is automatically swallowed . It is precisely the gravitational attraction point of a black hole: it is so herculean that nothing escapes from it.
However, the Mersini-Houghton approach is completely different from all of the above, since it merges two apparently contradictory fundamental theories of the Universe that offer as a conclusion that it is not possible that black holes exist . To arrive at this revelation, the researcher contrasted both the Stephen Hawking theory formulated in 1974 regarding that when a star collapses under its own gravity, radiation is produced, and the fundamental law of quantum theory, which states that no information from the Universe can never disappear.
The researcher showed that precisely because of the release of radiation, the star does not shed mass; by continuing to contract, it is impossible for it to reach the density necessary to become a black hole. Therefore, the black hole never forms . The combination of both theories, according to the author of the study, leads to a mathematical nonsense: black holes cannot exist.
Will we have to rethink the origins of the universe?
