130 million years ago the Sierra de la Demanda , southeast of the Burgos province, was inhabited by dinosaurs such as the rebaquisáurido, a 12-meter herbivore, or the armored reptile Polacanthus , endowed with huge defensive spines. But what was the environment like the large reptiles lived in? What plants and fauna surrounded them?
The Dinocyl company has just launched a project to answer these questions by analyzing all types of plant fossils (trunks, stems, leaves, cuticles, cones, seeds and pollen), and even exudates such as amber . This material is distributed over thirty different sites, almost all of them from the early Cretaceous (144-110 million years ago). The plant groups identified so far correspond to Conifers, Filicales (herbaceous ferns and others with an arboreal appearance), and Benettitales (similar to dwarf palms).
