Since 2007 there has been no trace of the then three-year-old Madeleine McCann. A sex offender from Germany with multiple criminal records is suspected of murder – but has not yet been questioned.
Braunschweig (dpa) – The suspect in the Maddie case was not confronted with allegations even just under a year after the suspicion of murder was published. “No, the accused has not yet been questioned,” said the Braunschweig public prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters of the German press agency.
On June 3, 2020, the investigators announced that a sex offender from Germany with multiple criminal records was suspected of murder. The then three-year-old Madeleine McCann disappeared on May 3, 2007 from an apartment complex in Praia da Luz, Portugal. Since then there has been no trace of her.
Wolters emphasized that it was not unusual for the suspect to be questioned – as in this case – at the end of the investigation. The law enforcement agency in Lower Saxony is responsible for the case because the 44-year-old suspect had his last German residence in Braunschweig.
“We assume that the girl is dead,” Wolters said in June 2020. “In the course of the past year there have been no exonerating circumstances in favor of the accused,” he now reported on the current status of the proceedings.
