Corona vaccination refused: hospital suspends 178 employees

In a hospital network in the USA, a mandatory vaccination against the coronavirus causes a stir. Numerous employees are suspended.

Texas – Nearly 25,000 employees of the Houston Methodist Hospital Association in the state of Texas are already considered fully vaccinated. It was announced in advance that it was a prerequisite for employees to be vaccinated against Corona by June 7th, 2021. A total of 178 employees missed this deadline. You have been suspended for two weeks and no salary is paid during that period.

The network’s CEO, Marc Boom, wrote in an internal communication that the Washington Post had received: “Of these employees, 27 have already been vaccinated once. So I hope that they will get their second dose soon ”. “I know that it is difficult and sad for some to lose the colleagues who have decided not to be vaccinated,” the CEO addresses the rest of the vaccinated workforce and adds: “We wish them all the best and are grateful for their service to society. We have to accept their decision ”.

US hospital suspends employees due to lack of corona vaccination

There have also been exceptions to the compulsory vaccination against the corona virus, explains Boom. 285 employees were granted an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Another 332 would have received postponement due to pregnancy or other reasons.

In March 2021, the hospital CEO called on US hospital employees to get vaccinated because the health system must lead by example. It would also protect patients. There was criticism for this call. Conservative media rushed to Boom and 117 employees complained. According to the Washington Post, they said they did not want to be used as “guinea pigs”. As a result, the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, an authority for equal opportunities in employment, added to its guidelines. It states that the Commission will not prevent employers from requiring their employees to be vaccinated before they enter the workplace. However, there must be adjustments for people with special religious principles or physical impairments.

Compulsory vaccination in the USA? Hospital employees outraged

The anger of many workers was great because of the compulsory vaccination in the US hospital. Dozens came together on Monday (June 7th, 2021) in front of a clinic that belongs to the hospital system and protested against the requirements. Signs reading “The vaccination is poison” were held high, The New York Times reported.

The suspended employees now have two weeks to catch up on their corona vaccination. If they do not meet the requirements by June 21, then a termination process will be initiated, the newspaper reports on. (Sophia Lother)
