Delta variant spreads: Lauterbach warns of "perfect storm for autumn"

Karl Lauterbach is concerned about the spread of the Delta variant in Germany. This is dangerous in three ways.

Berlin – While people in many places are looking forward to further relaxation of the Corona rules, SPD health politician Karl Lauterbach warns of a possible spread of the Delta variant in Germany in the fall. “I am quite sure that we will also get the Delta variant in Germany,” said the epidemiologist on Tuesday (June 15, 2021) on the television program rbb Spezial. With regard to the infection situation in the USA, Lauterbach tweeted that a “perfect storm for autumn” was building.

The activity of the Corona variant Delta is much more pronounced in relation to the seasons than originally assumed, as a new study by Oxford University has confirmed, according to Lauterbach. In summer, the risk of being infected is much lower. Nevertheless, according to Lauterbach, the variant is problematic in three ways: It is significantly more contagious, leads to a more severe course, and is partly resistant to the vaccination, especially if it was only vaccinated once. “But I hope that by then so many will be double vaccinated with us that there will not be such a big wave anymore,” said Lauterbach.

Corona: Lauterbach for vaccinations for children to better combat Delta variant

Herd immunity against Corona remains the goal. With a view to adults, this can be done by September, he said in an interview with rbb moderator Volker Wieprecht. But even if 80 percent of the population were immunized, that does not mean that the remaining 20 percent could no longer be infected. “There is actually no herd immunity in the narrower sense,” explained Lauterbach.

The SPD health expert therefore suggests that children should also be offered vaccinations. “With the Delta variant in particular, we saw in England that one percent of the infected children become so seriously ill that they have to be treated in hospital. It’s no small matter, ”said Lauterbach. Long Covid also plays a role. “That’s why I find it problematic when we adults protect ourselves with a vaccination and leave the children to the disease, that’s not right.”

Lauterbach amazed at effectiveness of Biontech vaccine against Delta variant

The state student representative of Brandenburg, Katharina Swinka, is also convinced that as many students as possible should be vaccinated against Corona. It also depends on whether masks should still be worn in the classrooms or not. “You have to be very careful when we go into the next school year. I believe that full face-to-face teaching with a mask is the best option for the time being, before we look any further. “

Most recently, the SPD politician was positive about the effectiveness of the Biontech vaccine. A new study would show the high effectiveness of the Biontech vaccine against Delta, which is why the vaccine protects against a serious Covid 19 disease, according to the MP. “It is always amazing how strong the Biontech vaccine works,” writes the expert on Twitter.
