In Mallorca, more young people are infected with the corona virus again. The tourism managers still expect a utilization of the island of 50 to 60 percent.
Palma – Despite the increasing corona infections, politics and the tourism industry on the Germans’ favorite holiday island Mallorca are hoping for a good summer season.
“The desire to travel is great. We are hoping for a season that will last well into autumn “, quoted the” Mallorca Zeitung “regional president Francina Armengol. The manager of hotels belonging to the Melía group in Magaluf, Belén Sanmartín, was also cautiously optimistic. They hope for a capacity of 50 to 60 percent this summer, reported the newspaper “Diario de Mallorca” on Saturday.
Magaluf, the British ‘ballerina’, so to speak, is awakening to new life after Great Britain put the Balearic Islands on the green list of regions that do not require quarantine when returning home. However, the British, unlike Germans, have to present a negative PCR test in order to travel to the archipelago in the Mediterranean.
But everyone who lives on Mallorca and the other Balearic islands of Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera is worried that last summer could repeat itself when the pandemic initially seemed under control, but the numbers then skyrocketed again over the course of the summer shot.
More infected young people, far fewer deaths, this is the formula for the corona development in Spain. The corona numbers had been falling steadily since April, and now they are rising again significantly. In the Balearic Islands, too, the seven-day incidence climbed to 94 again, also because of a mass infection of Spanish students on high school trips.
In contrast to previous corona waves, this time particularly younger people are affected, who develop only mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. The number of patients in intensive care units and the number of deaths have therefore remained low so far. In the group of 20 to 29 year olds, the seven-day incidence in Spain is around 450. Mallorca therefore started vaccinating 16 to 29 year olds last week.
Most of the cases so far go back to the alpha variant of the coronavirus, which was first detected in the UK. But the delta variant, which is considered more contagious, is on the advance. Experts predict that it will be predominant across Europe by the summer. dpa
