What would you call a restaurant specializing in hamburgers and sushi? Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar is an Eastern-Western fusion restaurant whose menu offers sushi, burgers and a unique line of combination dishes called, wait, burgushi.
Before dismissing this as outlandish fad, consider that the first Cowfish restaurant launched in 2010 and there are now three locations (Charlotte, Raleigh, and Orlando) and a fourth coming up in Atlanta. Cowfish has definitely caught it in a big way.
When we dined at Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar at Universal CityWalk at Universal Orlando Resort, the place was buzzing, as you would expect from the hot table of the moment. It’s a fun and energetic place with multi-level seating and an outdoor balcony. Carnivores will rejoice to see more than a dozen different gourmet burgers on the menu, while sushi lovers can try their excellent sashimi, nigiri, or makimono. There is a fun menu of drinks for adults and shakes, sodas and juices for children.
For families, this is a great place to encourage kids to take some culinary risks and try some new flavors. The dishes tend to mix a lot of ingredients and combine flavors and textures that you wouldn’t normally expect. For example, the appetizer list includes wrinkle-cut fried pickles (served with ranch dressing and horseradish aioli for dipping) and Big Al’s Yellowtail, which topping slices of yellowtail sashimi with thinly sliced jalapeƱo peppers and a side of ponzu sauce.
Do you have picky eaters? Order appetizers to share at the table and encourage children to try Parmesan Bacon Truffle Fries (fries topped with sticky cheese sprinkled with bacon and chives) or Crab Rangoon Sauce, served with potato chips. wonton drizzled with sweet chili sauce and chives.
The children’s menu is super fun and creative. Along with the usual suspects like PB&J rolls, ninja nuggets, and macaroni and cheese, you’ll also find California rolls and shrimp tempura, all of which come in lovely bento boxes that also include at least one fruit and adorable faux sushi made from it. of an oval Rice Krispie Candy and a Swedish fish.
Advice:
- Reservations are recommended. Ask for a table on the second floor balcony.
- If you are dining with children, consider sitting early.
- Try one of the burgushi dishes. I really liked the Doug’s Filet Roll, which is like a California roll made with avocado, kani, and cream cheese, topped with thin slices of seared filet mignon, spicy mayo, scallions, and masago.
- The shakes are so good that some people come just for a shake. (There are also versions for adults with alcohol).
