Tragic accident in Tyrol: A 78-year-old hiker slips shortly after starting a mountain tour – but can still cling to a tuft of grass. Her husband then has an accident during the rescue attempt.
St. Jakob im Defereggental – A couple from Munich hiked in the Tyrolean mountains in a fatal accident.
The Bavarians set out from a mountain hut on Tuesday in Defereggental, Austria, when the weather was good, the police reported. Accordingly, the 78-year-old woman slipped after a short time away. She could still hold on to a tuft of grass and thus prevent a fall.
When her 79-year-old husband tried to come to her aid, he also lost his footing and fell at least 30 meters in the steep, rocky terrain.
The woman could carefully slide down the slope to get to her husband who had died in the accident. With cries for help, she alerted the shepherd of a nearby mountain pasture, who started a rescue operation. When an emergency doctor arrived with a rescue helicopter, however, the man was already dead. Dpa
