Many tourists on the Greek island of Mykonos have tested positive for Corona in the past few days – the local government has imposed another lockdown.
Mykonos – luxurious yachts, long party nights, international celebrity tourists: tourism had just started again on the Greek island of Mykonos in the Aegean Sea. Due to rising corona numbers, however, the local government imposed a new lockdown for the island, which came into force on Sunday (July 18, 2021) at midnight. The rules that are now back in force include curfews between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., contact restrictions and a music ban.
After a number of travelers on the island had tested positive for Corona in the past few days, the incidence on the island of 10,000 inhabitants has risen to almost 400 (as of July 17, 2021). In all of Greece, the incidence on Sunday was 176.6 – the country in Eastern Europe has just been put back on the list of corona risk areas by the RKI.

Overcrowded quarantine hotels on Mykonos: Corona infected people sleep on the beach
Due to the rather young audience on the island, the average age of those on Mykonos suffering from corona is also low: According to the government, it is currently 27 years, as the editorial network Germany reports. The quarantine hotels are now overcrowded, report local Greek newspapers. Travelers are said to have already been stranded on the island and stayed on the beach. Numerous travelers have reportedly canceled their upcoming vacation to the island. This is bad news for the ailing tourism in Greece.
The celebrity guests on the island reportedly included players from the English national soccer team last week. A smartphone video distributed on social media showed how a group of Britons, including England players Luke Shaw and Kyle Walker, were apparently recovering from the 2021 European Football Championship in Mykonos and loudly listening to the Neil Diamond classic “Sweet Caroline “sings. In Great Britain, the corona incidence is currently higher than in Mykonos at over 440. (ska)
