New report 2013: the countries that emit the most spam

They are hated, ignored and avoided, but junk emails fill our inboxes every day. Already in the same Dirty Dozen report from last year prepared by the security company Sophos, it was revealed that India was the country that emitted the most spam. Now, a year later, the situation has changed and the United States is once again at the top of the ranking. In what position is Spain?

Approximately 13.8 percent of all spam sent worldwide between April and June 2013 was from the United States. This data represents a drop of almost six points compared to the previous ranking, although in reality the data is not so transparent.Spain, for its part, is in position number 7 on the list, with 3.4 percent of the total, just behind Belarus, China, Ukraine, Taiwan and India. This data represents an increase compared to the previous quarter of 0.7 percent, that is, more and more junk mail is sent from Spain.

But what does it depend on whether countries emit more or less junk mail? Are cybercriminals moving across the country? As Juan Antonio Gallego, Sophos Iberia Pre-Sales Engineer explains “this list indicates the countries from where spam is sent, not where the spammer is located. This is becausecybercriminals responsible for these types of attacks use zombie computers all over the worldfor it. For this reason, it is normal for the United States, China or India to be on the list, since they are countries with a very high population and a very high level of Internet penetration ”.

Spam has become a real nightmare for mail servers and security companies, hence the knowledge of users is essential to fight against this bad practice. As Gallego points out, “to prevent the entry of these malicious emails, you must have good antispam filtersIn this way we can avoid infections and large losses of productivity in companies. In addition, the first thing to bear in mind is never to open an email of unknown origin or suspicious appearance ”.
