The Wi-Fi Alliance organization has entered into a cooperation agreement with the Wigig Alliance for the integration of the fastest technology in future wireless products.
Version 1.0 of the Wigig technology works in the 60 Ghz range. In comparison, current WLAN networks operate in the 2.4 to 5 Ghz range.
The high frequency means that the speed can be increased up to 7 Gbps, a speed 10 times higher than that achieved with a common wireless network. The only drawback is that it will only be possible within a maximum radius of 10 meters.
Manufacturers have announced that future Wi-Fi certified units will be able to send and receive on all three frequencies; 2.4 and 5 Ghz for conventional wireless networks and 60 Ghz for Wigig networks. Also, users will be able to switch between networks without interrupting the connection. The small radius of reach of the networks will make the format optimal for replacing cables between PCs, monitors and other external units.
