Data from a study carried out by the French company Semiocast have revealed that only half of the tweets currently sent through Twitter , the most popular microblogging network on the Internet, are written in English . The figure represents a 25% reduction in messages published in this language compared to the previous year. Among the languages that have gained ground in recent months, Spanish (4% of messages) stands out, which ranks as the fifth most used behind Japanese (14%), Portuguese (9%) and Malay (6 %). They are followed by Italian, German and Dutch, with a penetration of between 1 and 2 percent each.
On the other hand, in February 2010, 50 million daily messages were registered on Twitter, that is, 600 tweets per second . An impressive figure considering that in 2007, when this social network was practically unknown outside the United States, users produced 5,000 tweets a day. In 2008, that number grew to 300,000 and by the beginning of last year it had reached 2.5 million.
