Sensation in the zoo in Israel: Mother Tana has given birth to a baby orangutan. Now the search is on for a suitable name for the young female monkey.
Tel Aviv – For the first time in more than a decade, a baby orangutan was born in the safari zoo near Tel Aviv.
For the twelve-year-old monkey mother Tana it is the first offspring, said zoo spokeswoman Sagit Horowitz. "The species is critically endangered worldwide, so every birth like this triggers international joy," she said. One is still looking for a suitable name for the two-week-old female monkey.
In nature, orangutans, which belong to the great apes, live in Asia on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. Most of their habitat is being lost due to the deforestation of tropical forests. dpa
