A team of scientists enters the Chernobyl reactor to measure radiation

A team of scientists from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, together with Ukrainian researchers and engineers, have re-entered the bowels of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant as part of a project investigating the use of robots to detect radiation and assess the risks that are still present in the ruins of the plant.

The high-end 3D visualizations achieved by the team's mapping technology will help the power plant decommissioning project, but also serve as a pilot project under real-world conditions to improve safety in this type of process. In this way, the technology that is implemented in this scenario will also be able to serve in the decommissioning of other nuclear power plants around the world.

"Venturing into the very control room of the failed reactor has been a tense but very challenging experience," acknowledged Tom Scott of the University of Bristol and co-director of the project. "Robots can make nuclear decommissioning faster, cheaper, and most importantly, safer!"
