Berries, especially strawberries and blueberries, can help keep the brain younger, according to a study by Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston (USA) published in the Annals of Neurology . The authors have shown that consuming these foods once or twice a week slows memory loss and preserves mental alertness in women thanks to their flavonoid content. The study, based on 121,700 adult women, began in 1976, when the majority were 30 years old. In addition, data was collected on 16,000 more women who had reached their 70s between 1995 and 2011.
The results reveal that increasing the consumption of antiocyanins and flavonoids through blueberries, cherries or strawberries makes memory loss and cognitive deterioration occur more slowly, specifically 2 and a half years slower than in women who do not consume this kind of fruits.
