Cape Canaveral – The moon simply fascinates many people on earth. And now, after more than 50 years, the US agency Nasa is again sending a rocket to the moon. It’s a historic day for the US space agency Nasa. Of course, only if everything goes according to plan. The first flight of the Artemis mission is still taking place without a crew, but people are expected to land on the moon again in 2025 and stay there.

Artemis 1: Historic step into the future of space exploration
Almost 50 years ago, the last human set foot on the moon with the Apollo 17 mission. The mission launched on December 7, 1972 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. On December 19, 1972, after twelve days, Commander Eugene Cernan, Apollo spacecraft pilot Ron Evans, and Lunar Module pilot Harrison “Jack” Schmitt returned to Earth.
In Greek mythology, the sun god Apollo had a twin sister named Artemis. Artemis is the goddess of the hunt and the moon. Nasa wants to go back to the moon – the US space agency leaves no doubt in the choice of name for the moon mission. Artemis is built in three stages:
- Artemis 1 : Test flight of the Space Launch System rocket (SLS rocket) and the Orion crew capsule on it.
- Artemis 2 : Manned flight into orbit around the moon.
- Artemis 3 : Astronauts are supposed to land on the moon – at the South Pole. There, water was detected in the form of ice.
- From Artemis 3, Nasa wants to launch crewed moon flights about once a year.
The Artemis moon mission has ambitious goals: With the Artemis program, people are supposed to land on the unexplored south pole of the moon. For this purpose, a space station called Gateway is planned in the orbit of the moon, from which people are also supposed to fly to Mars. A space shuttle is supposed to dock there later.
Artemis lunar mission: test flight is a stress test
But now the Artemis 1 test flight has to go smoothly. The mega moon rocket – the so-called Space Launch System (SLS) is to bring the Orion spacecraft into space. Two previous tests encountered various problems. Nevertheless, Nasa had given the green light for the unmanned test flight. (ml)
