Baby fur seal rescued from street near San Francisco

It was no ordinary mission for the California police: they had to rescue a baby fur seal on a busy road. Eyewitnesses had previously spoken of an “otter”.

San Rafael – A baby fur seal that got lost on a thoroughfare north of San Francisco has been rescued by police. The agency announced on Facebook that this was not an “ordinary” operation.

Two police officers discovered the little seal after the animal waddled across a street. The motorists could only just avoid collisions with the ear seal several times, it said.

Eyewitnesses had alerted the police that an “otter” was walking on a street in the village of San Rafael. The young animal then turned out to be an eared seal of the species of northern fur seals. They are characterized by a particularly thick fur.

Pictures showed the rescued animal on the roadside in thick ivy. That earned him the nickname “Ivy”. The marine mammal was brought to the Marine Mammal Center (marine mammal center) in Sausalito, where the young animal will first be observed, as the “San Francisco Chronicle” reported on Monday.

Fur seals usually spend most of their time in the open ocean, offshore and on remote islands. How the baby got lost in the town on San Francisco Bay is unclear. dpa
