Anyone who is dependent on state support for training or studying will receive more money from August 1st. A reform of BAföG makes this possible.

Berlin – The BAföG is becoming more modern, more flexible and is also reflected in the recipient’s account. That was decided by the German Bundestag. At the start of the new school year or the winter semester 2022/23, students and trainees will receive more money. But student representatives criticize the level of government support.

The amount of BAföG payments will increase by 5.75 percent from August 1st. This means that students will receive EUR 452 from this month instead of the previous maximum subsidy rate of EUR 427. Those who no longer live with their parents will in future receive 360 instead of 325 euros for the rent. The rates increase to 632 euros for pupils and trainees.

In addition, BAföG recipients receive a one-time heating allowance of 230 euros due to the increased energy costs. This applies to the 2021/2022 heating period.

The most important changes to BAföG:
Maximum subsidy rate rises to 452 euros per month
housing allowance rises to 360 euros per month
heating surcharge one-off fee of 230 euros
age limit increases to 45 years

BAföG increase: More flexibility and facilitation for applicants

Many students and trainees complain that the application process has been too complicated so far. This should now be easier. Although BAföG could already be applied for online, the digital application had to be confirmed with the e-ID function of the identity card or printed out and signed and sent to the responsible office for training support.

In the future, it should be enough to set up a BAföG digital account and only submit the application digitally. In the future, more people should be able to benefit from BAföG. Therefore, the allowances for parental income were increased by 20.75 percent. 2415 euros of the monthly parental income remain exempt from deduction. The age limit for applicants was raised from 30 to 45 years.

More money for trainees and students – but there is also criticism of the BAföG reform

However, student representatives criticize the level of the rising requirement rates: These would not even be sufficient to compensate for inflation, explained the German Student Union. Instead of 5.75 percent, the requirement rates would have to increase by at least ten percent so that students do not suffer a loss of purchasing power.

The left-wing parliamentary group in the Bundestag also criticized the reform and called for a more comprehensive structural reform of BAföG. The reform steps that have now been taken are only the first to be taken. In the medium term, BAföG is to be converted into parent-independent funding. (con)
